Coastal Geology Challenge and Adventure: July 29- August 4, 2019

We will kick off our challenge week with a trip to Pinnacles National Park’s West side Balconies Trail. later that day, we’ll drive to the East side setup camp and relaze around the campground. The next morning we’ll hike to the Bear Gulch Reservoir and the caves that are still open during the Big eared bat nesting season. After breaking camp, the next day, we’ll head south, stopping first in Parkfield, Cailf., “The Earthquake Capital of the World” to examine the the effects of faulting along the San Andres, which split the Pinnacles formation from the Neenach formation and moved the Pinnacles 180 miles north of it’s birthplace near Los Angeles, 23 million years ago. Next we’ll visit Mission in San Miguel for a look at Salinan art work in the chapel, painted in natural pigments. After leaving San Miguel, Our next stop will be the Pianetta Ranch and Winery Camp near Lake Nacimento, for an evening of exploring the coastal mountains. Our last two days will be spent at the Twisselman Pond/Ranch near Santa Margarita. Fishing, trip to Carrizo Plain are all part of this end of year camp out.
